The Society is very pleased that this Review is taking place. We were concerned that with these elections held in November 2014 that there was not going to be a Review. The Review was finally announced on 17 September – ten months after the elections. There is a need for a constructive debate on local government elections in this State, and this Review hopefully will provide a good starting point.
Currently under the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 Schedule 3, there are 10 elected members elected from single-member electorates with each determined on first-past-the-post grounds when there are multiple nominations. The Electoral Reform Society suggests electing all 10 from just one APY Lands electorate, using the quota-preferential method of proportional representation.
